SIERRA NEGRA VOLCANO & CHICO VOLCANO
Description
Sierra Negra is an impressive shield volcano located on Isabela Island in the Galapagos, Ecuador. With an altitude of 1124 meters above sea level, it is situated in the southeastern end of the island, connected to Cerro Azul volcano to the west and Alcedo volcano to the north. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the Galapagos, with eruptions recorded in 2016 and 2018. Lava flows between Sierra Negra and the town of Puerto Villamil offer a unique landscape. Covered by young lavas, its exact formation presents challenges, but estimates suggest it is approximately 535,000 years old. A fascinating destination for nature lovers wishing to explore the volcanic beauty of the Galapagos. The Chico Volcano is the final part of the journey that also includes Sierra Negra Volcano. While not a difficult climb, it's a long way.
